Laura Colmenares Guerra is a Colombian/Spanish visual artist based in Brussels. In 2002 she obtained a Masters degree in Audiovisual Media at Los Andes University in Bogota and in 2008 a Postgraduate degree in Transmedia Studies from Luca School of Arts, Brussels.
Laura’s work explores the potential of a diverse range of media including video, photography, 3D, matte painting and compositing. She combines these elements using composition techniques, common to film production. Her main axes of work are: immersive installation, sculpture, film, computer graphics and performance.
In the field of immersive installation, Laura has developed works that use technology in order to create an immersive experience for the viewers. In this way, she creates spaces with the intention of increasing awareness at a deep body level, for example, by breathing (Lungs [the Breather]); or through interaction with water valves (Lagunas) in order to make evident the impact and responsibility that we have as individuals and as societies with the environment. In these works, the choice of interactive devices is based on the possibilities of deepening this understanding. Her latest installation and sculpture work deal with the creation of environments that relate to the politics of landscape and the human intervention and constructions of the concepts of nature and natural. In parallel Laura has worked as a video performer, starting as a VJ in the early Techno scene of Bogota. This practice evolved into concrete experimental live audiovisual performances with musicians on stage, but as well into the creation of independent music-video pieces, that imply collaborations with musicians and composers but as well with various music labels.
Her work has recently been showcased at The Alexander Kasser Theatre, Peak Performances at Montclair State University (NJ), at Kings Place (London,UK), The Glasgow school of arts (Glasgow- UK), the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montreal, Canada, during the International Biennale of New Media Art, at festival Elektra-Mutek, EM15, at the Imperial Theatre of Montreal, Canada, at the Cube - Centre for Digital Creation (Paris, F), the International Computer Music Conference (Huddersfield, UK), Nadine, iMal at the Erasmus Museum and Sint-Lukasgalerie in Brussels (BE),
