Debby Huysmans

SIBIR
Debby Huysmans' photographs document a daily reality, travelling to former communist countries to catch authentic moments without strict story lines. Although it is not our own reality, it is recognizable. Not so long ago, we could find such images in our own small western culture. But everything changes and some things get lost in the giant leap to civilisation. Fascinated by the changing present of post-communism, Huysmans tries to merge into a different world, a different place which is changing rapidly to be forgotten forever. Almost adopted by local residents, Debby Huysmans spends her time amidst the everyday life and reality we are neglecting to see. These pictures represent a tranquillity far beyond our time, our rapid pace. By showing simple, almost basal everyday fragments and ignoring classic aesthetic valus, Huysmans' work captures what isn't visible.
