Simona Denicolai & Ivo Provoost

1998

“Denicolai & Provoost withdraw from all forms of elite artistic mechanisms and take up an art that is serious and exact and which almost, in a sociological sense, observes and analyzes economic and social realities. These observations then manifest themselves in almost playfully touching and seemingly simply developed pictures that permit the underlying complexities to shine through. Their work incorporates the entire spectrum of media coverage opportunities as tools of their artistic strategy.” (Konstanze Shütze)

Denicolai & Provoost work together since 1997. Within the aesthetic and political intimacy of their artistic digestive process, they question the artistic freedom given to artists in our Western, supposedly democratic societies. By putting temporary occupations on legs they double reality and confront the signals and limits of public space, as well as the relationship between the public and the intimate sphere. They like to work in collaboration with others. Their work is documented on www.denicolai-provoost.com.
