Hans Segers
The work of Hans Segers constitutes research into the pictorial aspect of the painted image, using scenarios, juxtaposition and the altering of positioning to incite new interpretations from the viewer based on the existing vocabulary of painting.
Hans Segers freely describes his compositions, comprising of these elements and the spaces in between the pieces, or ‘transmission spaces’, as ‘sentences’.
“...These ‘sentences’ are compositions of different drawings, paintings and other painted objects which often reveal the hidden images to be found within the world of painting. These images, which I have copied and transcribed in a very deliberate manner, are in turn isolated, emptied and purified and once transformed they create the opportunity for an alternative reading.” H.S.
This idea of decontextualisation and the appropriation of individual elements spans the entirety of Hans Segers’ work and forms the heart of his research today.
