Stief Desmet's work is characterised by recognisable symbols, sometimes laden with iconography. These are chosen consciously, other times intuitively and thereupon accurately delineated in harmony or in confrontation with his environment and his presence as an individual, which unmistakably is part of it. His work is associative, but at the same time noncommittal. It always departs from figuration, with painting as its medium.
