The Belfius Art Collection is the largest collection of Belgian Art in the country. The collection comprises more than 4300 pieces and unites the art collections of Gemeentekrediet, Paribas Bank Belgium and BACOB Bank. After World War II, both Gemeentekrediet and Paribas Belgium started to collect valuable art pieces from the national heritage to prevent them from disappearing abroad. From the beginning, Gemeentekrediet has always focused more on Belgian art starting from 1860, while Paribas mainly bought Belgian art from the 16th to 18th century and modern art. BACOB started its collection in 1980 and exclusively focuses on contemporary Belgian art. Today, the entire collection encompasses almost five centuries of artworks.
