Pieter Schuermans


Pieter Schuermans is a versatile composer and musician. As main diplomas he obtained Masters in Music at LUCA School of Arts campus Lemmens for the disciplines of Composition, Double Bass, Flute and Symphonic Conducting. He continued his studies in Ghent at the Orpheus Institute and abroad. He obtained his PhD as Doctor of the Arts at the KU Leuven with the thesis “Chaotic Pulse, Pulsating Chaos” and an accompanying artistic portfolio.

As a performing musician he played in almost all leading ensembles and orchestras in Flanders. For many years he was the permanent double bass player with the Collegium Instrumentale Brugense, with whom he realized numerous foreign concert tours and CD recordings.

Pieter Schuermans founded eaRis company, a company dedicated to interdisciplinarity. He composed and directed the performance Looking Through Eardrums, with dance, juggling and music, and led eaRis company throughout Europe with performances in Paris, Vienna, Brescia, Leipzig, Stockholm, etc., up to the far north in Sweden.

He devoted himself to youth orchestra work in Flanders; as a conductor, and as an inspirer on the board of Jeugd en Muziek Vlaanderen and Amaj. His career as a conductor took him to China, where he conducted several concerts in the renowned Oriental Arts Center in Shanghai. He made a name for himself with performances of Carmina Burana by Carl Orff. He is a popular guest conductor and regularly works with the Ataneres Ensemble, with whom he has also made several recordings, often of his own work.

Pieter Schuermans is chairman of the Composers Archipelago Flanders (ComAV) and is committed to promoting and supporting Flemish composers at home and abroad. The Belgian Music Days and the CD series Fingerprints are just a few of the projects he and ComAV are involved in.

As a teacher and coordinator of composition he is associated with LUCA School of Arts campus Lemmens. His artistic focus and research is currently on composition and conducting. As a composer, he has won several awards and recognitions.
