Katrien Gaelens

Katrien Gaelens

Katrien Gaelens combined her diverse musical interests during her studies. She studied baroque flute with Patrick Beuckels and flute with Carlos Bruneel at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. She also received a master’s degree in chamber music. Continuing her studies at the conservatory of Strasbourg, she went on to earn a specialization degree in contemporary music in the class of Mario Caroli.

Her passion for new music lead her to the Centre Acanthes Metz, the Darmstadt Summer Course and several international masterclasses, where she had the opportunity to work with flutists such as Mario Caroli, Sophie Cherrier, Eva Furrer and Wissam Boustany. Katrien was twice selected to participate in the Lucerne Festival Academy, where she played under the baton of Pierre Boulez and was coached by members of Ensemble Intercontemporain.

She is regularly invited to perform with ensembles such as ChampdAction, Spectra en Ictus Ensemble and is the flutist and co-founder of Nadar Ensemble. As a soloist and in the ensembles she created works by (a.o.) Bruno Mantovani, Simon Steen-Andersen, Michael Beil and Dai Fujikura.

Katrien is also an active chamber musician. As the solo flutist of Odysseia ensemble she performs in many and diverse formations. She is also the co-artistic and executive leader of the ensemble.

Recently she returned to an old love: the baroque flute - expanding her knowledge and skills in this historical performance practice.
