Pieter Theuns

Pieter Theuns

Pieter Theuns (°1978) started a musical career in his youth, focusing mainly on rock and pop music. His attention gradually shifts to classical music. In 2002 he obtained a master's degree in classical guitar, and in 2006 a bachelor's degree in theorbo.  In 2010 he founded B.O.X (Baroque Orchestration X), an ensemble that combines the sonic world of the Baroque period with the best of indie and alternative rock and pop music. B.O.X has now become a permanent fixture at home and abroad and, thanks to its hybrid sound, occupies a unique place in the musical landscape. Since 2017, B.O.X has been structurally supported by the Flemish Government. Some highlights: the pop opera 'You Us We All' (in collaboration with Shara Nova) performed at the Next Wave Festival of the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2015. The album 'Altid Sammen' (in collaboration with Efterklang) was presented live in 2019 in a sold-out Elbphilharmonie. From 2018 to 2021, B.O.X organized the annual miXmass festival in De Singel, inviting a host of national and international artists.

In 2022, Theuns founded 'Casa Saga', a residence place with a small theater hall and accommodation in bustling Borgerhout. It is the home base of B.O.X, but at the same time Casa Saga wants to be a home base for a wide range of socio-cultural players, both local and international.  In the meantime, however, Theuns also remained active within the classical genre. As a freelance continuo lute player, he played with numerous orchestras, including Capella. Mediterranea (Leonardo Garcia Alarcon), Ensemble Mare Nostrum (Andrea de Carlo) and Ensemble In Alto (Lambert Colson).  In 2015 he was Artist-in-residence of the Festival of Flanders Mechelen, and in 2018 of the Antwerp Baroque Year. With these types of roles, he gains recognition for the fact that he always succeeds in building bridges between different worlds, and in bringing together

audiences from different backgrounds.
