Harmen began his musical education in 1993 at the school of music of Izegem studying with Georges Coppé. Following this, Harmen continued his studies at the music high school 'Lemmensinstituut' in Leuven with Leo Wouters (Trumpet soloist of the National Orchestra of Belgium).

In 2004 he begun studying at the 'lemmensinstituut' college of music in Leuven. He studied both the trumpet and the cornet there with both Léon Petré and with Leo Wouters. He received the highest distinction on completion of his master degree.

In 2010 Harmen completed his post-Masters degree 'specialising on cornet' with Leo Wouters, he received the highest distinction.

Harmen first began playing with brass bands at the age of 16, sitting on the backrow of the cornet section of Brassband Buizingen before progressing to the flugel position. In 2006 he became the principal cornet of the same band.

Harmen works as a professional cornet player as part of the Royal Wind Band of the Belgian Guides. He also plays the first cornet in the brass quartet 'Exit_Brass!'.

Harmen plays a Besson Prestige BE-2028.
