Roberta Gigante

Spazio #9, 2018

EN
The work by Italian artist Roberta Gigante (°1986, lives and works in Ghent, Belgium) is extremely diverse: from sound installations and  interventions in the public space to sculptures and works on paper. Her works are subtle and playful. She explores archetypal themes from art history from an angle inspired by the scientific literature on dynamic processes of transformation and exchange. In her artistic practice, experimentation, chance and discovery play an important role. Often she starts from poetic or metaphorical images or ideas, and then seeks contact with experts and technicians in various fields to give these ideas a technical elaboration. When discussing and technically trying to implement her ideas, she is particularly attentive to what scientists call serendipity: finding something unexpected and useful, when the finder was looking for something completely different. Only part of this process is controlled; the rest is left to chance. Her work plays with the idea that there are forms that are especially appealing to us, they relate to us and resonate with experiences stored deep in us. She is interested in creating situations in which spontaneous processes can make their course and be become visible, tangible. Situations in which accidents and non-driven processes show their inner forms and beauty.
