Bart De Baere

Bart De Baere (1960) studied archaeology and art history and 'derailed' from there into contemporary art. He wrote reviews, worked for Jan Hoet in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Ghent, became a commissioner with him of Documenta IX and was an advisor to, among others, the Soros foundations in Eastern Europe, the biennales of Johannesburg and São Paulo and to the Flemish Minister of Culture for the formulation of a new policy for cultural heritage. After the exhibition This is the Show and the Show is Many Things in the Museum of Ghent, he mainly held exhibitions abroad. He was previously chairman of the Flemish museum commission and is now chairman of the Flemish Council for Culture. In 2002, he accepted the directorship of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp. He has written, among other things: 'The integrated Museum', in: Stopping the Process', Helsinki (NIFKA) 1998, and 'Potentiality and public space, archives as a metaphor and example for a political culture', in: Interarchive, Lüneburg/Cologne (Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König) 2002.
