Edwin Carels


Edwin Carels is lecturer and researcher at School of Arts KASK/HoGent. Since his doctorate Animation Beyond Animation he works on the postdoctoral research project Counter-archives. Carels has also been active for many years as senior programmer and curator for IFFR (International Film Festival Rotterdam), where he not only coordinates the section Deep Focus, but also creates thematic programmes on visual arts, music documentaries and film history. As an author, Carel publishes essays related to media archaeology, visual arts, film and animation. He is also connected to the M HKA, for whom he curated the following exhibitions: El Hotel Eléctrico (2014), Graphology (2011), Animism (2010) and The Projection Project (2006). For his projects, Carels has worked with Luc Tuymans, Chris Marker, The Quay Brothers, Robert Breer, Jan Svankmajer, Zoe Beloff, Ken Jacobs, Peter Kubelka, Philippe Parreno, Apichatpong Weeraseethakul and Jean-Luc Godard, among others.
