Catharina Dhaen (°1992, Antwerp) focuses on the fundamental elements of painting. She often starts with an observation of something from her surroundings, merely because of the necessity to put the first mark on the canvas. What follows is the result of subsequent reactions to that first mark.  Her actions don’t take place to serve the purpose of depicting something and they aren’t steered towards a fixed outcome. She doesn’t consider her painting exclusively as a window to the world, but as an object.
