Franky Michielsen

It’s clear that Franky Michielsen is fascinated by the constructed reality. His paintings are not a denial of the reality or an escape from it, they are the result of deconstruction and reconstruction of that reality through his own interventions. In this way, both the artist and ourselves control our reality. There is, of course, an objective reality that we try to capture in numbers and formulas, but the perception of the world around us is largely subjective and dependent on our personality. We interpret all the time. The artist creates a world from his individuality, from his subjective perception. In the end, Michielsen chooses the image from which he wants to leave and edits that image in many ways. He takes the entire image or only a part, he edits it with photoshop, he changes the colors, makes elements disappear or appear, become sharper or blurrier. Then he chooses a format, a surface on which it is printed. It's a big series of manipulations. And then he gets to work with acrylic and oil paint. The image continues to hint or it changes completely, elements come in that are strange, elements such as straight lines, geometric figures that you do not associate with a rock formation or a mountain landscape. The result of all this is a new image, an image that expresses his need to construct stories and challenge the viewer to find his own story in them. This is his merit, this makes him that interesting artist.
