Erien Withouck (1994) lives and works in Brussels. Her visual work focuses on exploring stories and rituals through archival research and conversations with people. Between 2020 and 2023, she worked on the Shetland Islands, studying female figures at sea in folk stories. In 2022, she embarked on a long-term research project in Belgium titled 'onkruid vergaat niet' (weeds never die), which examines the stories, customs, and rituals of local plants through their old common names.She also forms a duo practice with Renée Lorie, focusing on socially engaged artistic projects. Through conversations with local residents and passersby, Lorie and Withouck develop participatory projects. Photography is the medium through which and within which they work.
