Elke Gijsemans

Elke fuses painting with graphic design, exploring deeper layers of human emotions. Beneath each work, the almost childlike gaze is palpable of an artist who looks with fascination at the torn (struggling with self) human being. She combines realistic works with abstract forms in clashing colours. With a certain rawness, she manages to capture movement, making vibrations tangible and emotions palpable.

Every year, she purposefully withdraws into a safe cocoon for a while. She closes off the world to feel it better. Closes the eyes to see better. Folds inwards to give more intensely.

A member of the SOCHA collective, she explores different motifs. For instance, the work of writer Fikry El Azzouzi inspired her to explore the theme of 'innocent freedom'. Also the reptilian brain, how we as humans intuitively react to danger (hide, fight, flight, freeze) is a strong motif in the performance SOCHA On Fire! By zooming in on these actions and working them out visually, she confronts the viewer with her own experiences and universal emotions.

* SOCHA is a community of artists and performers inspired by the city's many stories. We love to spark art, change the city and celebrate chaos.

Founders: Junior Mthombeni and Tom Kestens.
