Pol Piérart

In the photographic work of Pol Pierart, the medium, because it is declined in the black and white simplicity and immediacy, favors the reading of the image, the deciphering of the words and of humor. Some little white signs, placed next to objects with which they interact or displayed on the background of exterior views, propose to read short sentences working in the way of slogans, maxims or expressions subtly diverted, notably by the use of homophony. In other pictures, in the manner of what the artist does in painting, a word is transformed by the rewriting of some letters or through a different spelling to open up on a double reading. The immediate environment of the artist, his lifestyle and the objects that surround him provide the supports of his reflexions. Therefore, it is logical that he sometimes portrays himself, not wanting to escape this vision of humanity of which he points out the problems and contradictions, in a tender satire or a more biting one when it stigmatizes the social or political situation. The artworks, like the thread of life, go from the most trivial register, the most frivolous, to the most serious register, often full of poetry. And if these images are based on the principle of play on words, they nevertheless invite the viewer, in the beating of decoding, to convene his own past, being built from these anecdotes that punctuate the daily life of everyone.
