Ateliers Mommen

The Ateliers Mommen is an artists' city: a place where artists live and work; a place where art is created and constantly evolving. The artistic dimension of the Mommen studios is accompanied by a social dimension (two indivisible identities that feed each other). The Mommen estate is located in Brussels, in the commune of Saint-Josse Ten Noode. It is located between the more popular neighbourhoods of this municipality and the " new European district ". A 15-minute walk from the city centre.

The Mommen studios are a beautiful complex of 7 19th-century buildings covering almost 3,000 m2. From the street, only the façade of a mansion can be seen. A carriage gate gives access to an avenue (called " l'impasse de la palette ") along which the various buildings are located. At the end of this avenue is a garden. The buildings include around 30 studio flats and some studios. These spaces are architecturally designed to create: north-facing, large windows, a minimal and modular layout according to needs. Each studio and studio house is autonomous and has the necessary technical infrastructure. The spaces range from 28 m2 to 200m2.

In the Mommen residential area, art is experienced on a daily basis. There is a continuity between workspace and dwelling, but this continuity is experienced and spatialised differently by the artists. Thus, no two studios or living spaces are the same.

Prices are moderate, adapted to the economic reality of the artists. Thus, this place makes artistic research possible. The artists can meet their primary living needs while investing more time and money in their art.

Artist city Mommen has long welcomed artists of different nationalities, generations, cultures and disciplines; artists living alone, in couples, with their families, with friends. Some artists have an international reputation, others do not have one or are not looking for one. Artists today include painters, photographers, sculptors, performers, multimedia artists, engravers, scenographers, video artists, collagists, textile designers... It is a place of free creativity. The city of Mommen preserves diversity, makes its identity, its richness.
