Atelier 340 Muzeum

Atelier 340 Muzeum is an independent art centre, created in 1979, for the study and promotion of sculpture and three-dimensional art in Belgium and abroad.

Atelier 340 Muzeum organises 3 to 4 exhibitions a year in its own spaces as well as several events extra muros. Three types of exhibitions are organised: thematic, confrontational or comparative, and personal (retrospectives). These are accompanied by quality publications; quadrilingual and richly illustrated catalogues, and postcards.

Atelier 340 Muzeum also houses a Documentation Centre specialised in contemporary sculpture and a Stone Cell.

Particular attention is paid to the relationhip between artists and their materials; to the ways in which material influences concept, its participation in the development of work or the manner in which it may be 'taken hostage'.

Along with its exhibitions, Atelier 340 Muzeum is building up a collection of artworks as a memory of past activities and a tool for further questioning. Workshops to acquaint children with sculpture are organised during school periods and the resulting work is regularly shown. Furthermore, Atelier 340 Muzeum organises conferences, debates and video screenings to complement the core activities.

Buildings are currently under renovation. Once completed, each separate activity will have a space of its own. Apart from a bookshop with new and second hand books specialising in contemporary sculpture, there will also be a pub-annex-restaurant functioning as a nocturnal art gallery and mini-library with free access, a video screening room, …
