Free Desmyter

Free Desmyter

Free Desmyter, pianist, enjoyed classical education at young age and developed himself as an excellent contemporary jazz improviser. His work is an amalgam of different musical styles due to his participation in social events and concerts with African Griots, Gwo Ka and Persian Mastermuscians.

As a composer/arranger he had assignments for film music and string ensemble. In spite of the fact, that his career as a jazzmusician had almost taken place for his interests in macrobiotics. And even though he has been invited in the year 2000 by Harvard University in Boston to come to study this subject. Free Desmyter, instead, confines himself to musicanship and rather applies these universal principles in music, which opened new directions, new dimensions.

The rhythm section of the “Free Desmyter Quartet” is working together for more than 10 years. This trio with Manolo Cabras on bass and Marek Patrman on the drums, has been extended by  John Ruocco, his eminence on saxophone and clarinet. A perfect match that emerges suddenly in the recording of a well tasted CD “Something to Share” for label “DE WERF”.

Ahoar is a formation in which Free Desmyter and Dietmar Fuhr (bass) are taking part together with two outstanding performers from Irak: Bassem Hawar (djoze) and Saad Thamir (vocals, percussion). Ahoar brings beautiful music based on Maqâm, which roots are in Ancient Sumeria. The origins of Maqâm is rough approximated 3000 years in history. Ahoar was awarded with the German Creole Award for Worldmusic in 2007. Ahoar recorded a session in the studio’s from Deutsche Welle, and that concert has been broadcasted on the radio in Bagdad during the war.

As a freelance pianist Free Desmyter played with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, Dick van der Harst’s beautiful worldcreation “Het huis der verborgen muziekjes 2” for LOD productions, N’Faly Kouyaté & Dunyakan, Foofango, Baba Sissoko Ensemble, Ahoar, Chris Joris Experience ... Which includes the collaboration with many great musicians such as Mamani Keita, Zoumana Dembélé, Reynaldo Hernandez, Nico Schepers, ensemble Oxalys, ensemble Orion, Amparo Cortés, ensemble Ialma, Frank Vaganee, The Mons Orchestra, Sofia Yéro, Kim Delcour, Els Van Laethem, Jeroen Van Herzeele, Erwin Van, Pierre Vaiana, Bassem Hawar, Dietmar Führ, and many more.
