Victoria Consort

Victoria Consort

Victoria Consort is striving to propagate the polyphonic tradition on a local (Flemish) as well as on a wider (European) scale. It wants to do so in a consequent and rigorous way, without compromising on quality and authenticity.

Three features highlight the own character and sound of Victoria Consort. First, it aims at performing the vast polyphonic heritage in a 'universal' way: the music is seen as part of a broader political, economical, cultural and musical universe, rather than being just a stand alone cultural phenomenon.

Second, every so now and often, Victoria Consort is performing polyphonic music in artistic crossover productions. Vocal music is combined with other artistic expressions, such as photography, videography, dance. All this is done to emphasize the universality mentioned above.

Third, Victoria Consort is performing as, well, a consort: a small group of twelve singers without a traditional conductor standing in front of them. Rather, the artistic leader of the gang is their 'primus inter pares'. This approach puts more responsibility on the shoulders of every individual member of the consort, just as was the case in the renaissance period.
