Augusto Pirodda

Augusto Pirodda

Augusto Pirodda is a minimalist. He plays few piano notes but chooses them carefully. “Choose” may be the wrong verb. Pirodda is a committed improviser who trusts the moment. The notes he chooses are the first ones; from there, intuition and emotion guide his fingers.

Born in Sardinia (Italy), Augusto Pirodda begins playing the piano at the age of 6. In the following years he works with many musicians of that area playing different kinds of music (Jazz, Blues, Pop, Latin...). After having followed several workshops with many important musicians, such as Dave Liebman, Paolo Fresu & John Taylor, he moves in 1998 to Holland to study jazz piano at the "Royal Conservatorium" in Den Haag, where in four years he get Bachelor and Master degree. After a short period in Italy he goes back to Holland and then to Brussel, where he's living now.

In all these years he had the opportunity to play all over Europe with many musicians, mainly from the Dutch and Belgium jazz scene, among them Mark Murphy, Eric Vloeimans, Ben Slujis, Jean Jacques Avenel, Simon Goubert, Eric Vermeulen Gary Peacock, Paul Motianand many others.

The collaboration with the bassist Gary Peacock and the drummer Paul Motian for the 2009 trio recording session ‘No Comment’ and working together with the Dutch dancer, actress, performer Neel de Jong both had a big influence on the artistic development of Augusto Pirodda’s work.

Augusto also plays and composes for his own projects solo, in trio or quartet (with Ben Sluijs , Manolo Cabras and Marek Patrman),…
