Ausonia

Ausonia

Ausonia is a musical ensemble from Namur. They specialise in French and German music from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, which they often combine with classical Japanese theatre.

Ausonia was founded in 2001 through the cooperation of harpsichordist Frédérick Haas, violinist Mira Glodeanu and double bassist James Munro, following the creation of their first recording with recently discovered violin sonatas by Francoeur. They are still the core members of the ensemble, assisted by a group of guest artists that varies according to the programme.

They strive for a profound interpretation of early music, imbued with its source material, yet liberated from learnt automatisms. Another important aspect of Ausonia's work is the crossover with Japanese Nō-theatre, a stylised dance-drama accompanied by instrumental and vocal music.
