Marie Verdurmen
Marie Verdurmen uses her art to reveal hidden contradictions and to create new imbalances of her own making. She paints answers to questions posed by both pop culture and politics. She addresses riddles such as gender and humanity. Her constant inspiration is the materiality of the bodies to which we are all shackled.
Marie Verdurmen's paintings are questions: rhetorical invitations to join her on a trip through an ever shifting reality. A look behind the coat of paint that covers society. Her questions are not academic nor cerebral, but concrete and visceral. They trace the boundaries of human identity and gender.
Her paintings testify to a tension. A tension between what is and what could be. Between what is mandatory and what is possible. Her portraits are not static, not regal: she puts her subject in the twilight between action and anxiety, in the limbo between want and accomplishment. The only certainty to be found in these paintings is the never relenting doubt of one's own identity.
