Ronald Van de Sompel


Ronald Van de Sompel is currently active as Advisor with the art commissioning team of Vlaams Bouwmeester, a governmental body of the Flemish Community, evaluating the quality of architecture and urban space in the public sector.

He is also employed as an Associate Curator and Researcher for Museum M in Leuven, a newly designed museum in the vicinity of Brussels, in preparation of a project examining the destruction of cultural heritage in periods of conflict, scheduled to take place in 2014.

After completing his Masters in Philosophy (Ethics) at the University of Ghent, he went on to attend the Curatorial Training Program of the École du Magasin in Grenoble (France), the first school of its kind in Europe.

For many years Ronald Van de Sompel worked as a Curator at M HKA in Antwerp (Belgium). He was also employed as Acting Senior Curator at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead (United Kingdom) and Artistic Director of FLACC Workplace for Visual Artists in Genk (Belgium), amongst others.

In addition he conducted research projects on contemporary visual arts in Asia for Europalia Nippon Kinen Foundation in Tokyo (Japan) and the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht (Netherlands).

Prior to his appointments at Museum M and Vlaams Bouwmeester, Ronald Van de Sompel curated the exhibition 'Hareng Saur: Ensor and Contemporary Art' at the Museum of Fine Arts and S.M.A.K. in Ghent (Belgium).
