Sofia Caesar

Visual artist working with sculpture, performance, installation, and video.
From Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Lives in Brussels, Belgium.

Caesar works with installation, performance, sculpture, and video. Her work evokes ambivalent bodily states between activity and passivity, movement and pause, work and rest; at the same time, they present a kind of “embodied critique” to the dominant infrastructures that define standards for the notions of productivity and work. In 2019, Caesar opened the exhibition Canseira (Rumos Itaú Cultural 2018), at the Helio Oitica Art Center (RJ, BR), the result of a long research on the relationship between the role of the artist, and the aesthetics of leisure appropriated by international coorporations like Google, and Brazilian Neo-concretism.

Sofia Caesar works are present in public and private collections such as FRAC Pays de la Loire, Parco d’Arte Vivente (IT), Jacques De La Beraudiere, MAC - Museum of Contemporary Art of Niteroi (BR), Itaú Cultural (BR), and others.

In the past years Caesar has shown work and collaborated with institutions such as the Moscow Biennial (RUS), M HKA (BE), SFMOMA (USA), A Tale of a Tub (NL), Tomie Ohtake Institute (BR), ISELP (BE), Contour Biennial (BE), Beursschouwburg (BE), CAVEAT/Jubilee (BE) amongst other organisations in Belgium and the world.
In 2018 Caesar was honoured the Prize Rumos Itaú Cultural (BR).

Sofia Caesar is an artist from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, currently living in Brussels as a Phd Candidate and teacher at LUCA School of the arts. Sofia is represented by Cavalo Gallery (Rio de Janeiro, BR)
