Laura Basterra Sanz

Cancel Everthing

Energy, action, fear, empathy, acceptance, complexity, and spontaneity encapsulate what Laura Basterra Sanz (b. 1979, Barcelona) pursues and confronts in her practice.

She creates abstract paintings as a means to organise her emotions, exploring the ideas of inner knowledge, body intelligence, and body-mind communication. Placing care on organic gestures, colour as a manifestation of vibration or frequency, as well as fluidity, she views canvases as an extension of her skin. Her paintings serve as sensory notations, reflecting her thoughts and emotions.

With her text-based artworks, she records ideas, crafting conclusions or playing with phonetics. Typography and colour help translate the emotional layers embedded in life experiences. She discusses her immediate environment, whether nature, social, or urban, to digest these interactions.

Through installations, Laura seeks to create harmony, bringing up subjects such as authority, freedom, health and love, explaining that this harmony is inextricably linked to nature.

Her artistic journey revolves around the feeling of freedom. Perhaps, true freedom is her ultimate pursuit? The resolution must naturally emerge from the process of painting itself.
