Véronique Alberghs

In the work of Véronique Alberghs we find echoes of themes and stylistic features gathered from the whole of art history. For one thing she is fascinated by the sublime, seemingly timeless nature of the art and architecture of classical antiquity. She incorporates these and other images in peculiar, fragmented compositions that are profoundly marked by the preparatory collages.

Although Alberghs produces work in various media, painting remains her natural habitat. While painting she renounces a personal touch or handwriting. Due to a certain detachment she simply 'quotes' the style of painting that best suits the theme or visual problem.

Alberghs's exhibition practice unfolds as an intense dialogue between monumental murals and autonomous compositions on panel, and also between figurative and abstract elements. This leads to complex and intriguing installations that entice the viewer into engaging in a true delirium of interpretations.
