Stefaan Dheedene

Stefaan Dheedene is an escapist artist. This is the least you can say about his universe. His best work is a collection of signs that confirm and negate each other. In his recent work 'Billy' he brings all the layers and the things that he is gradually mastering together: being present at the same time as disappearing. In the installation, that he has created, not just the familiar DIY bookcase of multinational company IKEA, but also the reproduction thereof - "Billy" criticises the anonymous industrial production machine and at the same time it is the affirmation thereof. In actual fact, Dheedene does not speak out directly, but through his clandestine action - infiltration into the system, this escapist has left his visiting card behind, in the multinational company and in the museum. He is there, everywhere and nowhere. Everything he shows houses or hides other jewels and duplicate meanings and functions.
